Given that we’re in March of 2020 and we’re coming off a show with one of the best tag team matches of all time, it’s hard to think back to 2019 and just all that teams accomplished in the previous year.
There is one team that accomplished a lot in 2019 who didn’t wear a lot of major US company gold around their wastes for much of the year, but still had a fantastic year.
However, the Lucha Bros were still voted in as the 2019 Tag Team of the Year by the readers of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The Young Bucks had won the vote for the previous 5 years.
So, just how did The Lucha Bros manage to win. Well, they did hold the AAA tag team titles twice, the Impact tag team titles, the Crash tag team titles, the MLW tag team titles and the AAW tag team titles. That’s a pretty solid year, if you ask me.
Don’t stress too much Young Buck fans. They finished 2nd in the voting.
TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR
1. PENTAGON JR. & REY FENIX
2. Matt & Nick Jackson
3. Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly
4. Santana & Ortiz
5. Suwama & Shuji Ishikawa
6. Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa
7. Go Shiozaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima
8. Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky
9. Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles
10. Mark & Jay Briscoe
It’s pretty clear to say WWE isn’t a big favorite of Wrestling Observer Newsletter readers. However, on the other hand, Vince McMahon doesn’t love tag team wrestling and while there has been a bit more focus on it lately, it isn’t THE focus like in AEW.
