When you own the building you wrestle in, you get to be pretty creative. It also helps when you have the likes of Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, and Kenny Omega too.
In a recent interview with Barstool’s My Mom’s Basement, Jericho revealed that it took two hours to fully put the recent AEW street fight together. Here is the full quote, courtesy of Fightful:
“We did a street fight where we fought throughout the whole concourse. Why? Because it was there. I got asked, ‘How long did it take you to plan it?’ Two hours. We got to the building, walked around, ‘Oh, there’s an ice machine. Matt, can you fit in this?’ There were golf carts, a scissors lift, we’re just finding this stuff to use. This is the only time where we’re going to be able to have this type of match. You take advantage of what’s there and use it to the best of your ability.
I had a blast putting it together and blast doing it. Little details, Matt his me with a bag of ice. We cut the bag of ice so it would explode. Money in the ATM so when Sammy threw Kenny into the ATM, we could find the money. Even the stupid witches hat, with the traffic cone, it wasn’t planned.”
It doesn’t seem like this was a difficult two hours for those involved. While other promotions may take two hours to re-write a segment multiple times, this seems to be a situation where the people involved took their time to ensure they made the best match possible.
