In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE higher-ups have banned the commentary team from using a phrase related to former AEW World Champion Chris Jericho while calling matches.
Meltzer explained that commentary has been told not to use the term Codebreaker on commentary. For those that don’t know, the Codebreaker is the name of Chris Jericho’s finishing move:
Asuka made a hot tag and hit a codebreaker, which, by the way, is a term the announcers are banned from using.
While Meltzer didn’t explicitly say this, it’s incredibly likely that the reason the commentary team have been told to stop using the term ‘Codebreaker’ when calling matches is because of the obvious links to Chris Jericho.
This decision really doesn’t make a lot of sense. The phrase ‘Codebreaker’ doesn’t promote Chris Jericho or draw attention to AEW, so it’s unclear why WWE felt the need to reportedly fan commentary from calling the move in this way.
