Earlier this week, the wrestling world was saddened to learn of the passing of the inaugural Intercontinental Champion and WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson had sadly passed away at the age of 79.
Following his passing this week, Dave Meltzer provided some heartbreaking details in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter about the state of Patterson’s health prior to his death on Wednesday.
Meltzer noted that Patterson was diagnosed with bladder cancer several years ago and was said to be in “bad shape”. He also developed dementia in the last few years and had been moved to an assisted living situation.
Pat Patterson was said to be very close with former WWE star Sylvain Grenier, with the pair having a father and son sort of relationship. Grenier even had power-of-attorney over Patterson.
Meltzer writes that Grenier went to see Pat in Florida and noticed that he’d lost a significant amount of weight. Pat was taken to the hospital where doctors discovered a tumour on his lung. He was set for a biopsy to check for cancer. on Friday, two after he passed away.
Towards the end of last month, Pat Patterson was reportedly rushed to hospital with a blood clot in his liver, with his tumour having spread. At this stage, Grenier was told to come to Florida if he wanted to see Patterson again.
By the time Grenier arrived in Florida, Meltzer writes that “Patterson was out of it”, and because of COVID, Grenier wasn’t allowed to spend a lot of time in the hospital. Pat sadly passed away just after 1am on Wednesday morning with liver failure.
