A WWE Hall of Famer has discussed nixed plans for him to win the Intercontinental Championship at a SummerSlam event.
Brutus Beefcake achieved a lot of his success as part of the “Dream Team” tandem alongside Greg Valentine. According to Beefcake, he was meant to win the Intercontinental Championship in August 1990.
Speaking with Wrestling Inc, Beefcake recalled a parasailing accident that took him out of action and cost him the championship run. The Hall of Famer explained that the accident was so severe, he was unsure whether he’d ever return to wrestling.
Pointing out that he was replaced by Texas Tornado (Kerry Von Erich), Beefcake said:
“Curt (Henning) and I had a great thing going. I was going to work with him for the next 12 months or so. We were doing phenomenal business, and the stage was set for me to win. It was really tough. The accident was so severe they told me I’d never be able to drive a car again, let alone get back into the wrestling business. They were tough times, the worst of times and the best of times.”
Beefcake officially returned to action in 1993, wrestling Ted DiBiase in his comeback match. He competed in a WrestleCade battle royal in 2015, which was ultimately won by EC3.
This year’s SummerSlam event takes place on August 21 in Las Vegas. Set for the same night as the Manny Pacquiao vs Errol Spence boxing match, WWE reportedly has a plan for dealing with the event clash.
