Triple H took over WWE creative following the retirement of Vince McMahon back in July, and the changes to the show were immediately noticable.
SummerSlam was the first WWE premium live event to take place under the Triple H regime, and several big changes to creative took place on that show, in the first hour alone.
The opening match saw Bianca Belair retain her Raw Women’s Championship against Becky Lynch, before Bayley, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY made their returns to confront the champion, with Becky turning babyface after the match to align with Bianca.
Becky had been a heel since her return at SummerSlam the prior year, despite still being one of the most popular stars on the roster. Becky discussed her turn on the Out of Character podcast, explaining the conversation she had with Triple H that led to her turn.
She said:
“I talked to Hunter a little bit before and he was like, ‘How do you feel about being a heel?’ I was like, ‘Honestly, it’s fun, I like it. I feel I’m maybe more naturally inclined to be a babyface, people like me better as a babyface. Clearly, I’m doing my job if they don’t like me.’ I’m just great, lads. I’m just great [laughs]. He goes, ‘I feel we’re swimming upstream keeping you as heel.’ ‘Yeah, I agree.’ Then the creative was laid out and I was like, ‘That sounds awesome, hell yeah, pop, pop, pop,'”
Becky then spoke about what it is like working with Triple H, praising the work he has done with the women in NXT, and how he perceives women’s wrestling as a whole.
She said:
“It’s great. Obviously, he has a great mind for it. His track record with what he’s done with women in NXT, I’m a product of that, I got to be in that system and become who I am today. He’s really championed women’s wrestling in general and not looking at it as women’s wrestling. This is a story, these are two people in a story, how do we make this story good? That’s what I love. How do we make this story good, no matter the gender.”
Becky is currently out of action with a separated shoulder that she suffered back at SummerSlam, with Alexa Bliss stepping in to the babyface side, teaming with Asuka and Bianca in a losing effort against Damage CTRL at Clash at the Castle.
