An update has emerged on the future of the Madison Square Garden in New York, following WWE’s recent visits to the arena.
As previously reported, New York City’s Planning Commission recommended a 10 year special permit to allow the venue to continue operating in its current location.
This was with the understanding that MSG will remain compatible with redevelopment efforts surrounding the nearby train station and transit hub.
Per City & State New York, It has now been revealed that a key New York City council committee has approved a five year renewal of the venue’s special operating permit.
City Council Committee on Land Use approved a five-year permit for Madison Square Garden, five years less than was initially recommended.
This comes amid conflicts between Madison Square Garden and transit hub, which prevent the approval of a longer permit.
Council Member Erik Bottcher, whose district covers Madison Square Garden and Penn station noted the following:
“Because of this use conflict, at this time the council cannot determine the long-term viability of an arena at this location. Therefore five years is an appropriate term for this special permit.”
WWE often presents Madison Square Garden as its spiritual home, with the company visiting the world-famous venue.
WWE most recently visited Madison Square Garden for the July 7 edition of SmackDown.
Following the taping, it was reported that there has been talk about making the stage for WWE MSG events smaller to allow for a larger capacity for future shows.
