Here’s how the popular Von Erich biopic The Iron Claw did on Oscar nomination day, with nominations for this year’s Academy Awards show being announced.
It had been heavily speculated that A24 was giving the movie an awards push, with The Iron Claw releasing in December 2023, so close to awards season.
With wrestling fans and casual moviegoers both praising the film, many hoped that the film would get nominated for several Oscars on Tuesday (January 23).
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case, with The Iron Claw earning no Academy Award nominations.
Many believed that Iron Claw’s best chance at earning a statuette would be in the Lead Actor category, with Zac Efron’s strong performance as Kevin Von Erich.
This was notably a strong category however, with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio also snubbed for his performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Movies nominated for Best Picture included both of last summer’s big hits Oppenheimer and Barbie, with highly-praised movies like Past Lives and Poor Things also making the cut.
This year’s nominees for Best Picture were:
American Fiction
Anatomy of a Fall
Barbie
The Holdovers
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
A number of notable names in wrestling worked on The Iron Claw, including Chavo Guerrero who was a Stunt Coordinator and AEW’s MJF who was credited as an Executive Producer.
