On February 20, GUNTHER solidified his place as the best Intercontinental Champion of all-time, passing Pedro Morales as the individual with longest accumulative time with the title – a staggering 620 days, in a single reign no less.
GUNTHER’s success has put him in a particularly tricky spot however, with very few challengers left in his division that he hasn’t already laid waste too.
For many, Jey Uso was a perfect candidate – but as expected that long-awaited singles title reign will have to wait as he enters a WrestleMania feud with his brother Jimmy.
Brock Lesnar was the clear choice that we and GUNTHER himself wanted, and so did WWE seemingly. However, due to Lesnar’s reported alleged involvement in the Vince McMahon allegations that may never happen.
So who’s left for the Austrian? Who can step up and dethrone the most dominant IC Champion of all-time? Let’s find out.
7. Chad Gable
Starting off with an admittedly sentimental choice – Chad Gable is someone who many felt was deserving of having the honor of defeating GUNTHER back during their feud last year.
The pair put on some absolutely excellent TV matches, perhaps only rivalled by one or two others across the 620 days GUNTHER has held the championship.
Yet, Gable ended up being another footnote in the end – but that hasn’t stopped Gable dreaming of a rematch, being adamant that they are not quite done with one another just yet following his September 4 loss.
Despite being one of WWE’s absolute best in-ring workers and a highly entertaining character as a whole, since his feud with GUNTHER, Gable has done very little of note.
However, he did recently tap out Ivar on Raw (February 19), so perhaps this is the beginning of a push towards a rematch at the Grandest Stage of Them All?
