10 Rey Mysterio Matches You Have To See

3. Rey Mysterio & Edge vs. Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle – No Mercy 2002

While many don’t think of Edge and Rey Mysterio as tag team partners, they did manage to have maybe the best match in either man’s careers as a team. At No Mercy 2002, Mysterio and Edge faced Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. This was the match to crown inaugural WWE Tag Team Champions and they absolutely tore the house down.

This match won the match of the year award in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, just to show how much praise was heaped onto these men. For good reason. These were four of the best performers of their era and this match had as much drama as you could want. Benoit and Angle hated each other but were forced to team together, meanwhile, Edge and Mysterio were the plucky underdog team.

This made for tremendous action as tension built between Angle and Benoit. In the end, it resulted in one of the best tag team matches in WWE history.

2. Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera – ECW Big Ass Extreme Bash Night Two 1996

The original ECW was always ahead of the curve with new talent. They managed to introduce the likes of Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Chris Jericho before either WWE or WCW would give them a second look. That trend continued to the likes of luchadors such as Rey Mysterio and Juventud Guerrera.

The ECW audience was a big factor in that. They were smart and watched wrestling from all over the world, meaning when guys like this arrived they showed them respect. At Big Ass Extreme Bash Night Two, Mysterio and Guerrera had one of the best matches in ECW history. It is frankly ridiculous how fast these two moved together but it is worth noting this is when Mysterio was 21 and two fully intact knees.

The action was appreciated by the fans who lost their collective minds for this best-of-three-falls match.

1. Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero – Halloween Havoc 1997

Many of the cruiserweight matches in WCW fell into obscurity due to how the company portrayed the wrestlers. This was a match that managed to escape that fate and become an instant classic in 1997. Eddie Guerrero was maybe Mysterio’s greatest rival. They competed together in WCW and WWE but this was their greatest match. They flowed perfectly together. Mysterio mentioned in his book that Guerrero was a perfectionist and while they continued to have good matches, it was always hard to try and top this one.

At Halloween Havoc 1997, Mysterio put his mask on the line against Guerrero’s Cruiserweight Championship. There were moves and counters in this match that I still have not seen replicated over two decades later. These two were just that innovative. The fans were also invested in the match, as Mysterio and Guerrero had both proven just how talented they were during their time in WCW. If you want an accurate representation of both men at their peak physically, this is truly a must-see.
