During the build-up to his WWE Title defence against Shinsuke Nakamura at Hell In A Cell ’17, Jinder Mahal caused controversy when he fired racist slurs in the direction of the challenger.
On an episode of SmackDown prior to the PPV, the champion was scripted to use cheap heat tactics in and effort to make fans care about his showdown with Nakamura.
He told the Japanese star that fans did not really like him, claiming they called him “Mr. Miyagi” behind his back. Mahal also mocked Shinsuke’s facial expressions and reinforced a stereotype about the way Japanese speak English in one single sentence: “they always rook (sic) the same”.
Blimey.
The fans in Oakland did not approve, angrily chanting “That’s too far” at Mahal.
It was. That WWE writers thought this was acceptable in 2017 tells you everything you need to know about why Nakamura has not been the success in WWE that people hoped.
