Christian first became champion following Edge’s retirement. He overcame Alberto Del Rio in a ladder match at Extreme Rules in 2011 to capture his best friend’s vacated title but lost it to Randy Orton on SmackDown! the following week.

WWE decided to give a little more stock to ‘Captain Charisma’, however, when he won the title back from Orton at Money in the Bank later that year. In the match, Orton was baited into giving Christian a low-blow, causing a DQ. Per the match stipulation, however, champions advantage was void, allowing the title to change hands.

He would only hold onto it for another month as the ‘Viper’ reclaimed the title at SummerSlam.
