Vince McMahon, WWE On 9/11, Eugene & More – 7 Shocking Revelations From WrestleTalk’s ‘Wrestling Unmasked’

6. GLAAD Felt Betrayed By The Billy & Chuck Storyline

In the early 2000s, WWE introduced a storyline involving Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo, hinting at a romantic relationship between the two wrestlers.

Their interactions, from matching outfits to intimate locker room moments, suggested more than just a tag team partnership. They even had Rico, a character playing their flamboyant “stylist.”

The storyline took a significant turn when Chuck proposed a “commitment ceremony” to Billy on live television, which Billy accepted amidst mixed reactions from the audience.

Surprisingly, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) supported the storyline, viewing it as a potential breakthrough in television representation. This led to mainstream media coverage, with Billy and Chuck appearing on prominent platforms like NBC’s Today Show and being featured in major publications.

The commitment ceremony, aired on 12th September 2002, took an unexpected turn.

As the ceremony was about to conclude, both Billy and Chuck revealed that their relationship was merely a publicity stunt, exclaiming, “We’re not gay!” The live audience cheered this revelation, and the segment ended with a chaotic brawl.

GLAAD felt deceived by WWE, stating that they were misled about the storyline’s direction. The Billy and Chuck tag team dissolved shortly after, reinforcing the notion that pro wrestling was not yet ready to embrace openly gay characters in a respectful and genuine manner.
