Major Update On Lawsuit Against Top AEW Star & AEW AEW

There has been an update on the lawsuit filed in December 2022 by Composite Effects, LLC (CFX) against both AEW and Austin Matelson (Luchasaurus).

The lawsuit claimed that there were similarities behind the masks used by Luchasaurus and one of their own designs.

On March 21 2023, AEW moved to dismiss five of the six counts raised by Composite Effects that argued AEW was “using a copyrighted mask design for merchandising purposes without the permission of the designer.”

On May 16 2023, the judge in the mask lawsuit ruled to deny the motion to dismiss.

As noted at the time, Composite Effects’ allegations of violation of copyright, LUPTA, and breach of contract all survived.

A new update has now been provided on the lawsuit, revealing that AEW and CFX have “reached a settlement”.

According to Thurston’s tweet on the subject, which includes an image of the Order of Dismissal:

“AEW and Louisiana-based mask maker Composite Effects (CFX) have reached a settlement in their dispute over the merchandising rights to the Luchasaurus mask.”

The Order of Dismissal notes that “this action is dismissed without prejudice to the right, upon good cause shown, to reopen the action or to seek summary judgment enforcing the compromise if settlement is not consummated within sixty days of this order.”

We’ll keep you posted if there are any further updates.
