AEW’s Will Ospreay has said that a top WWE star attempted to ‘sway’ him when making his decision on which company to join.
Ospreay’s deal with New Japan Pro Wrestling expired in February of this year, with there being a lot of question on where he would sign.
However, we didn’t have to wait long to find out, as Ospreay revealed at AEW Full Gear last November that he would be signing with AEW once his deal with NJPW expired, which happened in February.
Ospreay has said that joining AEW was simply the right move for him to make, but a top WWE star made a phone call to him to attempt to ‘sway’ him to join the company.
Speaking on AEW Unrestricted, Ospreay revealed that AJ Styles spoke to him during his free agency, with Ospreay discussing the influence AJ had on his career.
He said:
“AJ was on the phone to me when he was trying to, I guess the right word would be ‘sway’ in making my decision on which company I should (sign with). And it flatters me because AJ is my hero, everything I wanted to become.
“I feel like he’s always kept an eye on me. I feel like even now, I guess that’s what the phone call was about, but he always keeps an eye on me every now and again but for me, coming (to AEW) was the right thing to do. I just knew coming here, I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to be part of a change in the culture.”
