WWE will be holding a four team tournament to decide the next Women’s Tag Team Champions, because they don’t have enough people to make it a bigger tournament.
Teams are yet to be announced, but a report suggests there will be NXT stars in the tournament, as well as a couple of main roster teams.
As reported by Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, two of the likely teams will be Nikki ASH and Doudrop, and also Natalya and Shayna Baszler.
He said:
“So here’s the situation with the tag team title. They are gonna do a tournament. There are pitches that have been made. And that’s where we’re at right now. So there’s not a final thing. I know of different ideas.
“It does feel like it’ll probably be four teams, Nikki and Doudrop probably one of them, Shayna and Natalya probably the favorites because they’re probably the best of the four teams.
“And as far as the other two teams, there’s several different options, but it essentially would be either putting Carmella and Zelina back together even though they’ve already broken up, or just having two people who’ve never teamed before, and two teams of just people put together.
“But yeah, nothing’s finalised right now.”
Of course this tournament has come about very suddenly given the walk-out of Naomi and Sasha Banks last week, but it really does throw a spotlight onto how few women’s tag teams there are in WWE.
If we hear more regarding the competitors in the tournament, we will of course let you know.
