There has been a major update on Cody Rhodes’ chances of main eventing WrestleMania 40 against Roman Reigns.
Long believed by fans to be a certainty to take place in Philadelphia, the long-awaited rematch between The Tribal Chief and The American Nightmare looks set to be in jeopardy of taking place at this year’s event.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, Rhodes’ quest to ‘finish the story’ may have to be put on hold yet again as it seems like WWE may have different plans for the event.
Barrasso writes:
“Multiple sources close to WWE Head of Creative Paul “Triple H” Levesque have indicated that Rhodes will not headline this year’s event, nor will he “finish his story” at WrestleMania.”
While this doesn’t confirm anything just yet, it seems to add to potentially mounting evidence that the main event spot will instead go to The Rock, who returned to WWE TV on the Day 1 edition of Monday Night Raw; in which he teased a match with the Head of the Table.
Adding to that, Rock was officially named as a member of the TKO Board of Directors yesterday (January 23).
In an appearance on ESPN’s First Take following the announcement, Rock hyped up a potential match with Reigns at WrestleMania, saying that he believes it would be the biggest main event in it’s 40-year history.
Rock would stop short of saying it would be happening this year however, only admitting there is a “chance” it could happen.
Elsewhere a different report suggested that some in WWE may look to convince Rock to face Reigns at a different event than WrestleMania.
