Wrestle Kingdom 15 kicked off 2021 with a truly fantastic event. In many people’s eyes, the event peaked in quality with its main event between Kota Ibushi and Jay White.
The match was a masterpiece and was the longest match in Tokyo Dome history at over 48 minutes. It featured stellar performances from both White and Ibushi. So much so that Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter gave heaping praise to White after the match.
On Wrestling Observer Radio Meltzer recapped Wrestle Kingdom 15 and made the comment that White was almost like the ultimate pro wrestler. Very high praise. Here is the quote:
“Jay White does everything right. He can do everything in the ring. It’s almost like he is the ultimate pro wrestler. I can’t even think of anyone who plays their role any better. I mean I just though it was an amazing performance. Did you see the interview he did after the match? That was one of the best interviews- I mean that was like a Ric Flair-level interview. It was incredible.”
White cut a promo backstage after losing to Ibushi, essentially having a mental breakdown. This is the second year in a row that he has lost his chance to be IWGP Double Champion in the Tokyo Dome and did not take it well.
There have been reports recently that there is about a 50/50 chance that White stays with New Japan or takes his talents elsewhere if he doesn’t extend his contract.
