Former WWE Star Believes ‘Supernatural’ Characters Still Have A Place In WWE WWE

Fans were excited to see Bray Wyatt make his return to WWE after over a year away when he was re-signed by Triple H last Fall, returning at the climax of the Extreme Rules premium live event.

However, as Wyatt and Uncle Howdy’s story went on, fans found themselves becoming more tired of the act, with some even believing that wrestling has evolved beyond ‘supernatural’ characters like Wyatt and Howdy.

One man who has a lot of history with Wyatt’s character is Erick Rowan, who recently spoke to Wrestlesphere about Wyatt’s character.

Rowan noted that he believes that the best shows in wrestling feature a mixture of all things, which includes supernatural characters like Wyatt and Uncle Howdy.

He said:

“I think that… people’s attention spans are getting shorter.

“With professional wrestling, like, you have a two-three hour show. I don’t want to watch a show of just wrestling.  I don’t. I don’t want to get burnt out. If I watch three hours of non-stop matches, I’m just burnt out. Why would I ever want to watch a PPV? Why would I want to watch any of that if I’m seeing it every week. You need these builds and you need people to get talking. Like, yeah, you can put cool matches together, but at least give those people thirty to forty five seconds before, after, pre-tape, something that happens backstage to continue a different story before you go on to wrestle another match.

“I was also a fan of having the characters doing commentary and they might get involved in the guy’s match which further sets up a feud. To me, that’s the interesting stuff in wrestling. If it’s just match after match after match, it’s like you’ve got to have one loser, one wrestler. It gets so monotonous, which is funny because I’m a fan of wrestling but I can’t watch a wrestling show of just wrestling. I need that soap opera, I need that. That’s what gets people behind these characters, otherwise it’s just ‘I’m a really good professional wrestler.’

“There’s so many different performers on televisions. Not everyone can be just the best professional wrestler. You need all these different characters to get people invested. Yeah, you’re going to have really good professoinal wrestling matches regardless, even from the characters who don’t say they’re the best professional wrestler. So, to me, I love a show that’s well rounded – (that) has comedy, has drama, has cliffhangers. Like, there’s enough room on shows to have everything.

“You’re going to a larger audience, yeah, some people aren’t going to like the comedy, some people aren’t going like the drama or the cliffhangers, but they’ll stick around for the wrestling because when the performers are allowed the chance to put together fifteen, twenty minutes for a match, it’s going to be entertaining, it’s going to be meaningful, but if you do it all the time – it’s just.. I’ve seen six matches tonight, why do I want to watch another one?”

Wyatt has not appeared on WWE television since March, when he was taken off TV due to illness, with his planned WrestleMania 39 match with Bobby Lashley being scrapped.
