Tonight on Friday Night SmackDown, Braun Strowman has a chance to reclaim the title he lost at the end of August when he goes one-on-one with Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship.
To hype up the match and the season premiere of SmackDown, Roman Reigns did an interview with CBS Sports, where he spoke about how he is of the belief that Braun Strowman doesn’t deserve another title match:
“To be honest, I don’t think Braun Strowman deserves the opportunity. I beat him, I pinned him, I took the Universal Championship from him.”
To be fair, Roman Reigns isn’t wrong. Braun Strowman has not won a match (excluding Raw Underground) since the August 28 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, when he was Universal Champion. This does make it hard to justify why he has a title match tonight.
The reason the title match was booked, almost certainly, is because tonight’s episode of SmackDown is being billed as the show’s season premiere, and WWE has packed the show with title matches and big bouts.
The reason that Braun Strowman was likely selected as Roman Reigns’ opponent is that the “Monster Among Men” has now been drafted to Raw, meaning a loss won’t hurt him as much as he’ll be receiving somewhat of a character reset on the red brand.
Speaking of Braun Strowman, it has been reported that WWE has tentative plans to book the former Raw Tag Team Champion in a match against a former NXT star within the next twelve months. To find out more about that, click here.
