
August 2, 2018 marks the 26-year anniversary of Ron Simmons becoming the first African American world champion. He won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship by defeating then-champion Vader at a house show.
Ron Simmons’ best friend and former WWE Champion, John Bradshaw Layfield, honored this historic achievement.

John Bradshaw Layfield and Simmons were tag team partners during the Attitude Era. They were collectively known as APA, the Acolytes Protection Agency, picking up three WWE Tag Team Championships.
Simmons – otherwise known as Faarooq – certainly paved the way for world champions like Booker T and Mark Henry.
