It was announced by WWE yesterday that Raw’s new announce team once SmackDown moves to FOX will be Vic Joseph, Dio Maddin and Jerry Lawler.
The announcements of Joseph and Maddin weren’t surprises as WrestleVotes had reported that some time ago, but Lawler making his return to the commentary table has surprised many.
His last full-time commentary stint with WWE ended in 2016, and he has since been used as an analyst on pre-shows or as a special guest commentator for specific events.
Pro-Wrestling Sheet and the Wrestling Observer are both reporting that despite being back, Lawler will not be with WWE for long as the company is already looking for someone more permanent to fill the role.
From the Observer:
The return of Lawler is a surprise. Vince McMahon has always had age issues, and even though Lawler’s last comeback was strong, and it was obvious he was better in the role than anyone else, it was short-lived because of age. Lawler turns 70 in late November. He does have decades of experience at this but his return after being put out to pasture is usually not a move Vince makes. We’re also told this move is only temporary.
Ryan Satin has speculated that former women’s champion Mickie James could be the person to replace Lawler after she made a surprise commentary debut on WWE Main Event last week, but this has not been confirmed.
We will update you when more news is revealed regarding Lawler and a potential replacement.
