This December, the much anticipated John Cena heel turn is coming… to a theater near you.
Bumblebee, the sixth entry in the Transformers franchise will star Cena taking on the role of the villain for the first time in recent memory. This time around, it’s something a little more badass. Last time, he was a rap battler. This time, he’s a military jerk who dresses in as much black as is humanly possible. Because he’s the bad guy, right? How else would you know?
As a child of the 1980s, I grew up with Transformers, and was absolutely one of those people who never really got behind the chrome pipe look of Michael Bay’s robots in disguise. This trailer finally gives us Transformers that look like their 80s counterparts. Bumblebee, for example, is finally a VW Beetle. We get to see one of Soundwave’s tapes transform into Ravage. Even the jets have the right head shape and look. It’s an 80s nerd nostalgia trip, for sure.
A substantial role
As for the plot, it all seems pretty generic, right down to the beginning, where a teenager / mechanic buys Bumblebee and discovers his true nature. Then, a government agent of questionable morality (Cena) tries as hard as they can to capture them.
From what little we see of him in the trailer, it becomes clear that it’s a substantial role. It’s the perfect kind of movie for him: His name alone will draw people to the movie and the unavoidable campiness of the franchise will hide any issues with his rapidly developing acting skills.
Are you excited to see Cena take on Bumblebee? Let us know!
