Kenny Omega has discussed his career, explaining why after a while, he stopped pursuing a WWE main roster run.
Omega is currently an executive vice president for AEW, a relatively new promotion which has given a lot of non-WWE talent and former WWE names a platform to showcase their alternative styles.
Even before founding the company in 2019, Omega and the Young Bucks were examples of major stars who had proven that you didn’t need to get to WWE to be successful.
Speaking on CBC Radio, Omega noted that when he was training to become a wrestler, ‘WWF’ was seen as the dream destination.
Noting that the wider wrestling world opened his eyes, Omega said:
“We were raised as young individuals, as aspiring wrestlers, to believe that there’s one end game. There’s one place that you want to go.
“There’s one place that you need to go. You are a failure if you don’t go there. It was WWF. Yeah, at the time.
“But I had found myself not enjoying the product, and I had found myself wanting to perform in a different way, in a different way than people were used to seeing it.
“And that’s when I sort of had my eyes opened to the other territories in the world.”
“I guess I just wanted to be my own master and commander, and what I wanted to do was I wanted to make my stories more relatable. I wanted to tell human stories.”
Following reports that there are some in WWE who believe that the company could get Omega when his AEW contract expires, there has been a lot of speculation about a potential Omega WWE run.
Omega recently addressed rumors about his wrestling future, which you can read more about right here.
