Kofi Kingston Details Scrapped WrestleMania Match Plans With Mustafa Ali

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods entered a feud with Mustafa Ali and RETRIBUTION last February, with Kingston and Ali seemingly on course to meet in a singles match at WrestleMania 37.

The story between Ali and Kingston played off of a legitimate injury which saw Kofi replace Ali in the 2019 Elimination Chamber match, which grew to birth ‘KofiMania’.

Instead, Kingston and Woods would defend the Raw Tag Team Championship against AJ Styles and Omos at WrestleMania, while Ali wasn’t featured on the show.

Kofi recently detailed the scrapped match with Metro UK, where he described the match as ‘perfect’, but it wasn’t what ‘the office’ wanted.

He said:

‘It was perfect! It was written, you didn’t even have to go out of your way to creatively write anything else, it was perfect! But alas, that’s not the direction that “the office”, I guess, wanted to go in. That’s just kinda the way that it goes! Maybe down the line we’ll get a chance to revisit that opportunity. I was told a few things, and we start working towards those things that we’re told, and then all of a sudden it’s not those things. But that’s really kind of standard fare for us,’

Kofi continued on, explaining that he was disappointed that the match didn’t happen, putting over Ali as an ‘innovator’.

He said:

‘It was really disappointing, man, because I think he’s so amazing in the ring and such an innovator. He finds ways to do the littlest things in such a different way, but he puts his own spin on it. He has a great mind for the business and a great mind for storytelling. I would love to get in there and mix it up with him. I thought it would’ve been the perfect opportunity to do so, but again things change, and that’s the nature of the beast. Not to say I wasn’t upset about it, but I wasn’t really surprised that they did change.’

Mustafa Ali revealed on Twitter last night that he had requested his release from WWE. A ‘heated argument’ with Vince McMahon was what reportedly led to Ali being taken off TV.

Kofi himself is yet to score a WWE victory in the year 2022. You can see all of WWE’s win/loss records for 2022 here.
