It still feels weird to talk about NXT being on Tuesday, yet here we are. This is the official WrestleTalk live coverage of the April 27, 2021 episode of WWE NXT. Last week’s show hyped up a number of matches for this week’s program as well as the return of Adam Cole.
Cole will be giving an exclusive interview in his first appearance since NXT Takeover Stand and Deliver. Here is the announced card for tonight’s show:
- Adam Cole Returns for Exclusive Interview
- Dakota Kai vs. Mercedes Martinez
- Bronson Reed vs. Austin Theory
- Kushida & MSK vs. Legado del Fantasma
Legado del Fantasma def. MSK & Kushida
This match was about what you would expect and that is meant to be a very positive statement.
The early goings of the match were very quick-paced with MSK and Kushida running wild. However, Legado del Fantasma took out Nash Carter and Kushida at ringside and beat on Wes Lee three on one.
Wes Lee made his own comeback and fought the heels off but when he went to make the tag there was no one on the apron. Eventually, Nash Carter got back up and helped his partner while Kushida still lay at ringside.
Kushida eventually got back up and was immediately shut down by Santos Escobar. Escobar hit the Phantom Driver on Kushida while Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde hit the Side Russian Leg Sweep-dropkick on Nash Carter for the win.
Legado del Fantasmo posed over Kushida’s body as the show went off the air.
Adam Cole sit-down interview
Adam Cole had his sit-down interview and said as long as he is in NXT Kyle O’Reilly won’t be the top guy. He also said that when it comes to Karrion Kross the clock is ticking so maybe Cole will go after the NXT Championship again.
Most of this was just heelwork. Also as the segment was ending it panned to Kyle O’Reilly watching on a TV backstage. So I guess we’re just having this match again.
The Way attacks Ember & Shotzi
The Way attacked Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart ahead of their match with the Robert Stone Brand.
Indi Hartwell broke a flower vase over their head. The Robert Stone Brand was freaking out in the ring like they won the tag titles.
Cameron Grimes doesn't have Ted DiBiase's money
Cameron Grimes goes to buy a gold watch but Ted DiBiase shows up and shows him his diamond watch and laughs. This was another very funny bit.
Pete Dunne cuts a promo backstage
Pete Dunne is backstage and says he’s the baddest man in NXT. He lists off all the champions and says he wants gold. Pretty run-of-the-mill stuff here but still solid.
Imperium def. Killian Dain & Drake Maverick
Drake Maverick doesn’t trust Killian Dain in this match. Dain starts and uses his power to muscle Fabian Aichner around. Aichner eventually makes the tag to Marcel Bartell and Dain beats him up too.
Dain makes the tag to Maverick and hip tosses him onto Bartell. Maverick was running wild until Bartell and Aichner double-teamed him in the corner as the show went to a break.
Aichner and Bartell continued to double team Maverick and pulled Dain off the apron as Maverick went for the tag. Because Maverick was somehow turned around when he was reaching, he thought Dain had abandoned him.
Dain entered the ring illegally to make the comeback for his team. Dain ended up on the outside and Alexander Wolfe wouldn’t hit him with a chair which sparked anger from Bartell. Maverick hit a dive but Imperium took out Dain and hit Maverick with the uppercut-powerbomb combo for the win.
There’s progression here in the story even if some of the moments here didn’t quite land.
The Way is Upset
The Way is upset about Theory losing. They say that this is Dexter Lumis’ fault and its Ember and Shotzi’s fault for stealing Lumis from Indi. They then say Indi should go take care of her business.
MSK & Kushida Promo
MSK and Kushida were being interviewed backstage and MSK thanked Kushida for taking them under his wing. They really didn’t have much to say here, to be honest.
Bronson Reed def. Austin Theory
Bronson Reed got some early momentum going but he was distracted at ringside by the rest of The Way. While the referee was distracted, Johnny Gargano hit Reed with a superkick and Theory hit a dive. Theory pushed Reed into the steps as the show went to commercial.
Back from commercial and Theory was still in control. Reed hit a massive Gorilla Press Slam but Theory hit a drop toe hold into the middle buckle. Theory tried to lift Reed a couple times but Reed hit a suplex and a Samoan Drop.
Dexter Lumis came out and slowly chased Indi Hartwell around ringside. She got in the ring and they looked at each other. Lumis pushed Indi out of the way to avoid getting hit by Theory and Reed hit a clothesline and the Tsunami for the win.
Bronson Reed will now have another match against Johnny Gargano for the North American title at some point.
Legado del Fantasma backstage promo
Legado del Fantasma is backstage and says if it wasn’t for MSK last week they would have put Kushida in the hospital but they will get the win in the main event tonight.
Zayda Ramier def. Toni Storm
Toni Storm cut a promo before the match saying the next chapter of her career is ending Zoey Stark.
This was essentially a squash match with Storm getting all the offense until Zoey Stark came out for the distraction. Zayda Ramier pushed Storm off the top rope and hit a Shooting Star Press for the win.
Back to back embarrassing losses for Toni Storm.
Isaiah 'Swerve' Scott promo
Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott cut another promo from the studio and said he’s proud of Leon Ruff attacking him backstage. However, he said he is going to take this out of the ring as they will have a Falls Count Anywhere match next week.
Grizzled Young Veterans & Thatcher and Ciampa promo
The Grizzled Young Veterans cut a promo saying MSK will take any match except one against them. They talked about being the tag team this division needs and they will be the next NXT Tag Team Champions.
Timothy Thatcher and Tommaso Ciampa interrupted them and said they were also grizzled veterans who want to face MSK. Thatcher started chanting something about taking your shoes off at Zack Gibson and they all got in a brawl.
I don’t watch NXT UK so I didn’t get this but the match these two teams will have will probably be excellent.
Cameron Grimes goes watch shopping
Cameron Grimes is going watch shopping and this will be a series of skits tonight. Cameron Grimes is very funny.
"Dexter Lumis" sends Ember and Shotzi Flowers
This was a pretty solid segment. Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart were being interviewed about their match with Aliyah and Jessi Kamea when they were given flowers.
Franky Monet walked in and read the card saying it was from Dexter Lumis. Both Ember and Shotzi were grossed out but it is pretty clear the flowers were sent by The Way as a way to break Indi Hartwell’s heart enough for her to move on.
Mercedes Martinez def. (DQ) Dakota Kai
Mercedes Martinez got the upper hand after some early grappling, hitting a big spinebuster for a nearfall. There was an ugly botch early as Martinez tried to grab Kai’s leg on a leapfrog but they came down awkwardly.
Kai managed to cut Martinez off and ground her with strikes and chokes but it only lasted so long as Martinez started her comeback, hitting a big Dominator-esque move for a nearfall. Martinez missed a move in the corner and Kai hit a Helluva kick as the show went to its first break.
Back from the break, Kai was still in control, hitting a hanging facebuster for a nearfall. Martinez hit a big discus forearm to regain control and then hit three consecutive butterfly suplexes and a wonky armbreaker as Kai rolled to the outside.
Kai tried to distract the referee so Raquel Gonzalez could hit Martinez but Martinez dropped her with a punch. Back in the ring, Martinez hit a powerful knee strike and Raquel hit the ring for the DQ. Lame finish but a solid match.
After the match, Raquel beat up Martinez at ringside and left her laying after javelin throwing her into the barricade.
Welcome to our live coverage of this week’s episode of NXT! Bronson Reed could earn a North American Championship match if he defeats Austin Theory tonight, while Mercedes Martinez continues to stake her claim for a shot at the NXT Women’s title in a match with Dakota Kai.
