NJPW G1 Climax Night 1 Results!

The first evening of the G1 Climax Tournament carried on where their special on United States shores left off. Namely, with some top class action which made stars. This was never more noticeable than in the main event of the evening which saw Block A favorites Kazuchika Okada and ‘Switchblade’ Jay White contest a thriller.

The dejected, almost broken former IWGP Heavyweight Champion has gone from unbeatable to a stepping stone for young blood looking to make a name for themselves. Since looking at the lights for Kenny Omega, he hasn’t picked up a singles victory losing to the likes of Zack Sabre Jr. It’s only right. Now he’s had his moment in the sun, Okada’s job is to ready those primed to replace him.

Jay White is one of those men who has looked like a main event star in recent months. His loss of the IWGP United States Championship to the brilliant Juice Robinson has made many speculate that he’s destined for a main event run with the ‘Cleaner’ after the Bullet Club are finished with the Firing Squad. We’re all still holding out hopes of Omega vs. Tonga.

Looking to secure an early lead in proceedings, White and Okada went to war, both with something to prove. After twenty-five minutes of breathless action, it was the New Zealander who prevailed in another shock result after a low blow, chair shot, and Blade Runner. What a spectacle it was putting White firmly in the realms of superb workers in 2018. One just hopes they capitalize on this dejected Okada, it has potential.

Elsewhere in Block A:

  • Togi Makabe best YOSHI-HASHI
  • Hangman Page rolled over Bad Luck Fale
  • Michael Elgin cracked EVIL
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi went over Minoru Suzuki

In non-tournament matches:

  • SHO and Tomohiro Ishii whitewashed YOH and Toru Yano
  • The Guerillas of Destiny prevailed over Juice Robinson and David Finlay
  • Taka Michinoku and Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Yujiro Takahashi and Kota Ibushi
  • Tetsuya Naito and SANADA overwhelmed Chase Owens and Kenny Omega.
