Tony Khan has revealed that he talked with NJPW about his AEW promo taunting WWE president Nick Khan.
Prior to Double or Nothing, Khan cut an interesting promo. Following reports that WWE was in talks with NJPW, Khan fired some shots at the rival promotion.
Trolling WWE’s Nick Khan, Tony Khan said:
“I think there is room for only room for one Khan in the wrestling business. It’s me, Tony Khan, not some con man from Connecticut.”
According to Khan, NJPW thought this promo was a good idea. During the AEW Double or Nothing 2021 media scrum, Khan noted that he did ask NJPW for their thoughts on the promo before it aired on Dynamite.
NJPW thought the promo was great, Khan explained. The AEW president pointed out that he’s done some great things with the Japanese promotion, and is excited to work with NJPW in the future.
Also commenting on his relationship with WWE, Khan said:
“I talked to New Japan and I asked them if they thought it would be a good idea and a good promo. They thought it was great and I thought it would be a great promo. It made sense. It was a big weekend for us and it’s true, we have a lot of stuff going with New Japan. Everyone is welcome to talk to each other and we’ve done some great stuff with New Japan just in the last few weeks and I think we’re going to do a lot of great things going forward with everything we’ve talked about and agreed to. I’m excited about it.”
(When asked whether he had any talks with WWE) “It’s little stuff, mostly backchannel stuff. A good example if when Chris ended up on Broken Skull Sessions. Chris and Steve had talked and Steve talked to the people who run WWE and it was good.”
At Double or Nothing, NJPW Strong star Lio Rush made his AEW debut in the Casino Battle Royale. Rush is reportedly still signed with NJPW.
It was also announced that All Out will emanate from Chicago. The summer pay-per-view will take place on September 5.
