Last night, AEW rather surprisingly announced that Kenny Omega would be facing Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship on the December 2 episode of Dynamite. Many assumed this would be saved for pay-per-view.
Initally, many speculated that this was because it would allow Jon Moxley to drop the title so he could return to NJPW for January and defend his IWGP US Championship at Wrestle Kingdom against KENTA.
While this may have had a part to play in it, Dave Meltzer is reporting on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that Tony Khan wanted the match to take place in just under three weeks for a totally different reason.
Meltzer noted that he spoke to Tony Khan about the decision, and revealed that Tony was the one who wanted the match to take place on Dynamite as a way to try and boost the ratings for the next few months:
“[Tony Khan] wanted something real big to kick off December and January”
This certainly makes sense as it seems like AEW has some big TV specials planned for the next few months. Tony Khan even revealed during the post-Full Gear media call some details about a special show is coming in January.
Interestingly, Meltzer also revealed that Omega vs. Moxley coming out of Full Gear wasn’t always the plan, noting that originally AEW had the champion defending against another AEW star as the top feud.
