The reason that a popular WWE Raw star doesn’t yet have a match set for the August 23 SummerSlam event has been revealed.
Kevin Owens is not yet booked for SummerSlam and just last night lost to Randy Orton in the main event of Raw, leaving him without any real momentum at the moment.
He’s chipped in with the Apollo Crews/MVP program, the Rey Mysterio/Seth Rollins program, and most recently with Ric Flair and Randy Orton, but doesn’t have a major rival right now.
Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio that the reason for this is because Owens was essentially the backup plan to have more matches with Rollins if Rey Mysterio didn’t agree to stay with WWE.
Meltzer said:
“Kevin Owens was there who is another, you know. He’s fallen out of his program. He was supposed to be in a program with Seth until they just dropped it when Rey agreed to stay.”
There’s only one episode of Raw left now until SummerSlam, so if he’s going to have an important place on the card something’s gonna have to happen this coming Monday.
His TV appearances had been slightly sporadic due to the COVID-19 situation, and he hasn’t been on the main show of a pay-per-view since beating Rollins at WrestleMania in April.
