Report: Who Was Responsible For Cody & Jericho Segments

It’s being reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that Cody Rhodes and Chris Jericho themselves wrote and were responsible for each of their own homerun segments last night on AEW Dynamite.

Cody Rhodes delivered the Silver Spoon promo last night on TNT.  Many are calling this the best promo in many, many years.

Dave Meltzer even states in his newsletter:

“There are 40 writers working in WWE and they haven’t written a promo this good perhaps ever.”

Strong words there from Mr. Meltzer.  However, as an older wrestling fan who grew up watching Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair in the NWA, I would have to agree.

Meltzer goes on to claim that Cody himself was responsible for writing the promo.  The only thing he had to get cleared ahead of time was the phrase “Stupid D*ck.”

It’s amazing what can happen when a wrestler delivers his own words in a passionate promo.  Maybe some of those WWE writers aren’t needed.

As for Jericho’s spoof video, Meltzer claims the idea for doing a spoof of Cody’s video was Jericho’s, as were many of the jokes.

Whether it was the comedic names such as Spanish God or Chris’s Aunt’s Friend From Church, a lot of them had inside meanings.

Number one was Soultrain Jones for Virgil.  Soultrain Jones was a name Mike Jones (Virgil) used in his early days as a wrestler in Memphis.

The cursing old lady’s last name was Bobski.  If that sounds familiar, it was a nod to Southpaw Regional Wrestling.  Jericho played Clint Bobski in the highly popular WWE Youtube Series.

Even though these two segments were very popular amongst those who did watch, Meltzer claims these segments are segments you can advertise to bring viewers in.

The hope is word of mouth of how great these segments were will bring in future viewers.  AEW viewership was slightly up, but not as much as many had hoped post world series.

Even if they don’t bring in new viewers, those who are watching certainly are enjoying them.
