What with ever-declining ratings and show attendances, it will come as no surprise to hear that WWE may be forced to scale down as the amount of fans being drawn to the product steadily declines.
Two for one tickets are now a common site for Raw, SmackDown and PPV shows, with the most recent PPV show, Stomping Grounds, drawing just 6,000 fans, with the majority of the arena being tarped off.
The latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that a recent Raw house show in New York drew just 2,100 fans, despite two for one tickets being offered. According to the Newsletter, while die hard fans still snap up tickets as soon as they go on sale, this is happening less and less, with more fans slowly losing interest.
Writing in the Newsletter, Dave Meltzer said:
WWE has become closer to what AEW and NJPW are, in the sense they have their niche audience that will buy tickets as soon as they are available, and obviously due to exposure that audience is bigger, but the casual audience that was the life blood of wrestling isn’t connecting with WWE and doesn’t know about the alternatives since nobody else has TV with any real visibility right now.
So it seems that the problem isn’t WWE-centric, with wrestling as a whole taking a bit of a hit in terms of interest.
Hopefully with AEW starting weekly TV shows in August, this trend can be turned around and draw back old fans and bring in new ones.
