WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam has recently revealed why it took so long for him to make his debut in AEW, discussing past talks with the company that fell through.
RVD made his first appearance for AEW in a segment on the August 2 edition of Dynamite, confronting then-FTW Champion Jack Perry, who he faced off against for the title a week later.
Talking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, RVD revealed that he first had contact with AEW a year prior to when he made his first appearance for the company
Explaining what happened, Van Dam said:
“Communication dropped, that’s it.
“Sometimes that would happen, sometimes both of the companies every once in a while would call just to check on my schedule, that’s it.
“I don’t hold it, I hold it in mind skeptically as a possibility, and that’s all because I know how it works. That’s how it works, I never hear from them again, and it’s like, ‘Whatever.'”
RVD discussed how his eventual AEW debut did in fact materialise, revealing that AEW President Tony Khan contacted him regarding the August appearance at the start of 2023.
Expressing his disbelief at Khan’s long-term booking, RVD said:
“It was kind of hypothetical, checking my interest and availability and the dates that they mentioned even though that it was way back then ended up being the same exact dates, August 2 and August 9, and I couldn’t believe that.”
“How could you be that far planned ahead because that was like January maybe February, but it was a long, long time ago they first brought it up.”
Despite losing his AEW debut to Perry on August 9, RVD would return to compete again at the recent September 23 edition of AEW Collision, teaming with FTW Champion HOOK to defeat Matt Menard and Angelo Parker.
