Jon Moxley may be about to tick off a major item from his career bucket list by competing in this year’s NJPW G1 Climax tournament over the summer.
Moxley shocked the world with his AEW debut at Double or Nothing just one month after leaving WWE and he was announced for NJPW’s final night of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament on June 5 shortly afterwards.
According to several reports, the June 5 date will not be Mox’s only appearance for the promotion.
As it stands he currently has no confirmed independent or AEW dates in August (but he does have dates both sides of that), leading to rumours that he will be featured in New Japan’s gruelling tournament.
Moxley on his Talk Is Jericho appearance talked about how he had some things lined up that would shock people but they were things that he wanted to do for the experience.
The G1 would certainly fall into that category. It is a gruelling tournament, with each participant competing in nine (or 10 if they reach the final) major singles matches against a range of opponents.
All of this takes place over a relatively short period of time, with competitors wrestling in multi-man matches in between their tournament bouts. It’s a career-changer.
Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio speculated about Moxley appearing in the tournament and while they could not confirm his involvement, it does appear likely based on the evidence.
NJPW is desperately in need of a major name to boost struggling ticket sales for the opening night of the G1 in Dallas, Texas and Moxley could be the perfect acquisition to spike interest in the event.
The thought of the former WWE man being able to spread his creative wings in first-time-ever collisions against the likes of Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii and Kota Ibushi is a tantalising prospect.
