Top WWE Star Addresses Star Ratings System & Dave Meltzer Wrestling Observer

A top WWE star has addressed the star ratings system and Dave Meltzer.

No other fan or journalist has had more conversation, discussion and debate regarding their opinion than Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer and his much maligned star ratings system.

Every week, fans far and wide look up the Wrestling Observer Newsletter to see how many stars Meltzer has given their favorite matches of the week. However, wrestlers have had not so nice things to say about Meltzer’s star ratings in the past.

Speaking on the latest edition of Impaulsive, Seth Rollins discussed Meltzer and his star ratings with Logan Paul. He said:

“Oh god, don’t get me started on the ratings system. Oh Jesus Christ. Those star ratings don’t mean…”

When Paul’s co-host was about to mention Dave Meltzer by name, Seth interrupted to say:

“Don’t even say his last name. Don’t even give him the credit on this podcast. I know [he gave Seth five stars]. Do you know, if I’m not mistaken, like I think Kurt Angle has no five star matches, one of the greatest of all time, and there’s a plethora of these people.”

“My point is, Dave’s great, he’s a historian, Dave Meltzer is his name, he’s great, he’s a great historian, he’s been a part of the business for a long long time, he started with the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.”

“That was his big thing, so they used to send out literal actual newsletters every month to subscribers just detailing what had happened anywhere in wrestling that month.”

“He was big in Japan, he would look at everything in Mexico, anything where there was wrestling going on that was drawing crowds, he was reporting on it, injuries, backstage news, all that stuff. Now, there’s this whole culture online because the backstage stuff is ‘ooh what are they gonna do?’”

After Logan asked Seth “how do they get this information,” Rollins informed him that there’s moles everywhere in this business. Paul replied:

“Because I see these tweets, the rumors, and I’m like ‘I don’t even know about this, how do you know?’ Sometimes I do know about it, and it’s true, and I don’t know who is leaking this information.”

Rollins responded by noting how the business is and for Paul to be careful with who he tells stuff to, saying:

“Dude, somebody out there is leaking it to somebody, or telling somebody who’s telling somebody who’s telling somebody, you never know, you’ve got to be very careful with information in this industry”

Further elaborating on his thoughts on Dave Meltzer in particular, Seth said:

“He’s great as a historian but match ratings are silly. Match ratings are very silly, it’s so subjective. Like I said, if it’s good, it’s good, you know when something’s good.”

“I can watch a match on any show on the planet in front of a crowd of 70,000, in front of 20, if people are popping, it’s a good time. That’s the name of the game, but to like to put star ratings on it, good for you.”

“Good for you, you found something that people have latched onto, and it’s fun to debate, and all that stuff, but in the grand scheme, it means very little.”

Seth Rollins is set to defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor in a rematch at SummerSlam on August 5.
