SmackDown Star Was Supposed To Be Kurt Angle’s Protégé

A SmackDown star has revealed that he was originally meant to debut as the protégé of Kurt Angle, before plans were changed.

Dolph Ziggler has been involved in many memorable storylines, both good and… questionable. The former World Heavyweight Champion has revealed that he felt sick when the Spirit Squad faction was pitched to him.

Speaking on Out Of Character with Ryan Satin, Ziggler stated that he was originally set to be Kurt Angle’s protégé. Ziggler noted that his stomach dropped when he found out that he was going to be a cheerleader instead.

Not able to picture a cheerleader in the main event of WrestleMania, Ziggler cracked a joke about D-Generation-X sending the faction back to OVW.

Here is the full quote:

“I was told, ‘you’re going to be Kurt Angle’s protégé because you’re an awesome collegiate wrestler, you’re a badass, you work hard, you’re picking it up almost as fast as he did’ but then they go ‘you’re a cheerleader, what do you think about that?’ and my stomach dropped and I felt sick.

“Like, this isn’t character work, I thought at the time, you get ONE shot in this business and I somehow got this far and my one shot is going to be a cheerleader. I was like there’s no way I pictured in my head that one year from now a cheerleader is in the main event of WrestleMania fighting for a world title, if anything the cheerleaders are gonna be dumped into a box and sent back to OVW. So, I guess I’m pretty fast at learning.”

Ziggler and Bobby Roode recently lost the SmackDown Tag Team Championship to Dominik and Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania Backlash. This made the Mysterio’s the first father-son duo to win tag-team gold in WWE history.

Also during Sunday’s pay-per-view event, a group of zombies attacked The Miz following his match with Damian Priest. Bray Wyatt has poked fun at this angle, teasing his return to WWE.
