After six long years, Tetsuya Naito has won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 14. With the win he wins the Double Gold Dash and now holds both the heavyweight title and the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.
Naito defeated Jay White on Night One of Wrestle Kingdom 14 to win the Intercontinental title, earning his spot in the main event tonight. He then defeated Kazuchika Okada to win the heavyweight title.
The win is the culmination of a six and a half year storyline. It has been written about before, but Naito’s path from winning the G1 Climax in 2013 until this moment is truly one of wrestling’s greatest stories. After developing a symbiotic relationship with the Intercontinental title, Naito fulfilled his destiny the only way appropriate. He did so with both belts in hand.
The title change caps off Wrestle Kingdom 14. In total the two-day event featured eight title changes. Naito’s win tonight being the most high profile among them.
