In the past few days, WWE has released dozens of wrestlers, producers and who knows how many non-wrestling staff after Vince McMahon decided it was time to save some money.
This came despite reports that WWE could break $1 Billion in revenue in this current financial year for the first time in history, and that the company has hundreds of millions of dollars in cash reserves in case of emergencies.
While the wrestlers who were released were perhaps not all that surprising, for the backroom staff like the writers and office workers, there was reportedly another reason some were released.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, age played a role in a number of writer and office workers being released.
“Writers and office workers were cutback heavily, and in many cases age was a factor.”
Vince is a fan of keeping his workforce young, unless they’re called The Undertaker or Bill Goldberg of course, so the release of older staff may not come as too much of a surprise.
Mike Chioda, who has been with WWE for 31 years, was also given his future endeavours, but it isn’t known whether him being one of the older referees played a part in him being one of those released.
All reports point towards another wave of releases coming in the next 48 hours, so don’t be surprised if another 20 stars find themselves without a job by the start of next week.
