At WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on April 7, 2024.
There were reports, as WrestleMania 40 approached, that The Rock vs Roman Reigns was being considered as “a greater attraction for the mainstream.”
With the WrestleMania 40 Kick-Off Show on February 8, 2024, however, The Rock aligned himself with Reigns, setting into motion the match we would eventually see.
Further details on the backstage situation over The Rock vs Reigns have emerged with Dave Meltzer saying on Wrestling Observer Radio that:
“There was definitely people who did not want the Roman Reigns and The Rock match. There was a lot of manipulation going on that a lot of people aren’t aware of.
“I wouldn’t even call it power plays, but a lot of interesting games being played on both sides. There were a lot of people who wanted Cody Rhodes to get that spot before the fan thing happened and didn’t want The Rock to get that spot, but The Rock was going to get that spot unless he volunteered not to have it because y’know he’s gonna get what he wants.
“No one can say anything bad about him publicly but there are people who are very resentful of him going like ‘I came back and wrestling is cool’ after WWE had a tremendous year, and the idea that he’s kinda trying to take credit for this resurgence that happened a year before came back.
“Even people who were very negative on him readily admit that when he came in it made the brand more popular, he drove TV ratings to a great degree, he helped drive this WrestleMania to be the biggest two-day WrestleMania there’s been.
“There were definitely people who were happy that Sunday outdrew Saturday when it came to viewers.”
