The Undertaker Lied To Shawn Michaels About ‘Taping His Fists’ Story

One of the most famous Attitude Era backstage stories took place at WrestleMania XIV. As Steve Austin was primed to take the WWE Championship from Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker was going to make sure that happened.

The story is that the Deadman sat behind the curtain with his fists taped ready for a fight should Michaels have tried to weasel his way out of dropping the title. Now, The Undertaker has revealed he lied to Michaels about the story years later.

Appearing on Broken Skull Sessions with Steve Austin, The Undertaker recalled Michaels asking him about that night. Here is the quote, courtesy of Fightful:

“Shawn and I are close now and he approached me about that story, and I felt bad because our relationship had progressed so far and he’s somebody that I have a tremendous amount of professional history with. He asked me about the story, ‘Were you really going to beat me up?’ I was like, ‘Nahhhh.’ I blew it off. He goes, ‘I didn’t think so, it didn’t sound like you, to go through the theatrics of wrapping your fists and everything.’ I totally lied through my teeth to him because I felt bad. I care so much for him now, but that night, I was going to do what needed to be done to make sure you walked out with the title.”

Thankfully, the two have a much better relationship than they did in 1998. Michaels and Undertaker’s two WrestleMania matches in 2009 and 2010 are considered two of the best matches in WWE history.
