Speaking ahead of August 27’s All In pay-per-view event from London’s Wembley Stadium, AEW CEO Tony Khan has picked out a potentially surprising name as the company’s most successful wrestler.
Following this past week’s AEW Dynamite (August 16), the match card for All In has taken shape with matches such as Chris Jericho vs Will Ospreay and even a Stadium Stampede match now set for London.
Prior to Wednesday however, it was made official that ‘The Icon’ Sting would be competing, tagging alongside Darby Allin to take on Swerve Strickland and AR Fox in a Coffin Match.
In a recent interview with Uproxx, Khan was asked about the Stinger in particular and what it means to have such a legend on the card for one of the biggest wrestling shows of all-time.
Khan then named Sting as the most successful competitor in the company due to his undefeated record thus far, explaining:
“Sting stepped away from pro wrestling for several years and by all indications, he was going to retire. He felt he had a great run in him alongside his tag team partner, Darby Allin.
“He’s had some of the most exciting and memorable matches in AEW in the last several years and Sting has accumulated an undefeated record where Sting is, in many ways, the most successful wrestler in AEW.”
Khan continued saying he’s honored to have the Hall of Famer in AEW and competing at All In:
“Every time he steps in the ring we try to pay tribute to his great career and how honored we are to have Sting with us. I think this will be one of the great memories we’ve been able to make for Sting in AEW.
“Sting and Darby Allin. Darby’s old friends, Swerve Strickland and A.R. Fox in a coffin match, in front of the biggest paid crowd ever to watch Sting wrestle in his entire amazing career.”
Despite Sting’s former WCW boss Eric Bischoff calling on ‘The Icon’ to retire at All In, the 64-year-old doesn’t seem intent on stopping just yet.
Elsewhere in the interview, Khan revealed the real reason AEW decided to house All In at Wembley Stadium, click here to find out why.
