A wrestling legend is set to receive an MBE from King Charles on the 2024 New Year’s Honours list for his dedication to wrestling.

The 2024 New Year’s Honours list has now been officially released, and a wrestling legend has been named among those set to receive an MBE from King Charles.

That man in Dave Finlay Sr., the father of current WWE trainer Fit Finlay and grandfather of NJPW’s David Finlay and new WWE signing Brogan Finlay.

Taking to Twitter, Fit Finlay reacted to his father being listed among the recipients, writing:

My Dad has been appointed MBE in the 2024 New Years Honors list for his dedication to Wrestling, to be awarded by the King. Proud of you Dad. Well deserved!!

Dave Sr spoke to BBC Sport in Northern Ireland about his love of wrestling, and the current roles his family have in the industry today.

He said:

“Wrestling was so enjoyable, then my children got into it and it was a great hobby for everyone.

“I founded my own club and it exploded. We started to win British Championship medals, we had Commonwealth Games competitors and we had great success. I was invited all over the world to coach because I just seemed to have that knack for coaching wrestling.”

“My son David is in America now and he’s a big coach with the WWE. My two grandsons wrestle in Japan and America. My granddaughter was champion at high school in America, so I must have been doing something right.”
