WWE Star Misses Out On Historic Record By Less Than A Week WWE

Former NXT North American Champion Wes Lee was days away from breaking a WWE record prior to his title loss on Tuesday’s edition of NXT.

On the July 18 show, Wes Lee defended his championship against WWE Raw star Dominik Mysterio.

Following interference from his Judgment Day faction mates, Mysterio pinned Lee to win the title.

The title change was surprising for many reasons. Not only is Mysterio a main roster star, but Wes Lee was planned to defend the title against Mustafa Ali at NXT’s Great American Bash show on July 30.

As pointed out by Wrestling Stats & Info on Twitter, Lee was just days away from becoming the longest reigning North American Champion with combined days.

Lee was less than a week away from holding the title for more combined days than any other wrestler in NXT history.

Wes Lee held the title for 269 days in his single reign, which was the longest single reign in the title’s history, and as mentioned above, was almost longer than every other North American Champion’s combined days tally.

Carmelo Hayes currently holds the combined reigns record, holding the title for 273 days across his two reigns. Both Hayes and Lee have held the North American Title for longer than a number of major names, including main roster stars Johnny Gargano and Damian Priest, and AEW names Keith Lee, Adam Cole and Swerve Strickland.

Lee first won the vacant title at NXT Halloween Havoc 2022, defeating Carmelo Hayes, Von Wagner, Nathan Frazer and Oro Mensah in a ladder match for the gold.

At that time, the title had been made vacant after Solo Sikoa defeated Hayes for the gold on the September 13, 2022 NXT episode, with Shawn Michaels stating that NXT didn’t sanction or recognise this title match.

Dominik Mysterio has now commented on his North American Title win, which you can read more about right here.
