WWE Star Picks Up First Televised Singles Win In Over Two Years

A WWE star has picked up their first televised singles victory in over two years in a match that aired tonight.

After signing with WWE coming out of the Cruiserweight Classic in 2016, Akira Tozawa has now spent an entire decade with the company.

During that time, Tozawa has reigned as a Cruiserweight Champion and 16-time 24/7 Champion, though he has spent most of his time as an undercard wrestler on Raw.

In recent years, Tozawa has served as Otis’ tag team partner in the Alpha Academy after Chad Gable left the group, and while the two have them have picked up plenty of tag team victories in their time together, that success has not extended to Tozawa in a singles capacity.

Akira Tozawa Scores First Televised Singles Win In Over Two Years

Tozawa’s last televised singles victory came during the June 27, 2024 episode of WWE Main Event, where he defeated the LWO’s Joaquin Wilde, with his only other non-dark match singles win in that time being on WWE Speed against Riley Osborne, which aired exclusively on Twitter.

However, on tonight’s WWE Main Event show, a match aired between Tozawa and NXT star Jasper Troy, with Tozawa managing to pick up the win via a roll up, scoring his first singles win on WWE television in over two years.

Tozawa has been working as a singles wrestler in recent weeks after Otis suffered an injury during the Alpha Academy’s rivalry with the Vision.

While a lot of attention will always go to those that are booked as major stars on WWE television, wrestlers like Akira Tozawa are arguably just as an important part of the company.

Tozawa, as well as Otis, has been able to capture a genuine connection with the WWE fans over the past few years, which makes him the perfect opponent for a heel that WWE wants to elevate to face on the way up.

No matter who Tozawa is put in the ring with, including tonight on Main Event against Jasper Troy, who was a name most fans in the arena weren’t as familiar with, he is able to make the fans believe in him before he is beaten by the heel.

His resume and accolades might not be all that extravagant, but WWE is lucky to have a wrestler like Akira Tozawa on their roster.
