Popular WWE star R-Truth has congratulated Swerve Strickland on his AEW World Championship win at AEW Dynasty 2024.
At the AEW Dynasty pay-per-view, Swerve Strickland defeated Samoa Joe to win the AEW World Title in the main event. In doing so, Swerve became the first African American AEW World Champion in the company’s history.
Many stars from AEW and beyond the wrestling world have reached out or made public statements praising and congratulating Strickland since then.
Appearing on the Battleground podcast, WWE World Tag Team Champion R-Truth was asked about being the first Black wrestler to win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship and his influence on current champions like Swerve Strickland or Trick Williams. He answered:
“I get emotional. It’s such a prestige and honor to have,”
“Let me say this, I want to congratulate Swerve. Definitely got to congratulate him on his achievement, his accomplishment. I meant to call you, I’m sorry I haven’t called you yet. I’m going to text you.”
“He’s been killing it for a while. He’s so talented, so humble, so well-deserving of what he’s doing now and you’re just seeing the beginning of him.”
Truth continued on to praise some of the NXT stars who have won championship gold, such as Carmelo Hayes, Trick Williams and Oba Femi. He said:
“Trick, Oba, Carmello, these guys, man, it’s such a good time to be a part of this. It’s such a good time to see these guys give me my flowers.”
“Strickland has always talked good about me and it’s just, again, it’s a real moment for me to be in the position that I’m in.”
Swerve Strickland took to social media to show his appreciation to R-Truth for showing him love.
Strickland made his first successful defense of the AEW World Championship over Claudio Castagnoli on the April 27 edition of AEW Collision.
