WWE Star Was Set To Win Universal Championship In Saudi Arabia

The Crown Jewel event in 2018 saw Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman fight over the Universal Championship which had just been vacated by Roman Reigns, who was going to battle Leukemia for the second time.

The match was won by Brock Lesnar, but it has now emerged that the original plans for the show saw Braun Strowman beating Lesnar in Saudi Arabia and become the Universal Champion.

While speaking on the ‘Say Less With Kaz, Lowkey and Rosy’ podcast, former WWE writer Kazeem Famuyide said that Braun Strowman was supposed to win the Universal title in Saudi Arabia in 2018.

Famuyide explained that the following week’s episode of Raw had to be completely rewritten as the creative team had planned for Braun Strowman to be champion on the show. He said:

“There was one time where we all thought a match was going — this was — man, f**k it, I’m not working there anymore. It was in Saudi (Crown Jewel 2018) and Braun was supposed to beat Brock. This is right after Roman announced he had cancer, right? So, Brock and Braun were supposed to fight for the world title and we had a whole Monday Night Raw written with Braun Strowman as champion and then sike, Brock Lesnar wins and then as soon as Brock wins, we all had to go back into the office, rewrite the whole show and I just thought it was some s**t where it’s just like oh, they’re just kind of keeping us on the DL (down low), whatever but I didn’t know they could change like (that).”

Braun Strowman would have to wait until 2020 to win his first Universal Championship, pinning Goldberg at WrestleMania 36 after Roman Reigns was forced to pull out of the show due to COVID-19 risks.

The ‘Monster Among Men’ will be hoping to win his second world title later this month when he faces Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre in a three-way at WrestleMania Backlash for the WWE Championship.
