According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE officials are worried that the company may lose a number of its younger viewers to AEW when it starts weekly TV in October 2019.
Teenagers are one of WWE’s key demographics, as pro-wrestling is a form of entertainment which traditionally lends itself to a younger audience which enjoys violence. WWE needs younger fans, because these younger fans become the life-long fans.
It is thought that WWE’s very recent introduction of more edgy segments such as the Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley spot and Corey Graves shouting “holy s***” will appeal to this younger audience and help draw them in.
Meltzer also noted that younger NXT stars could soon be called up in an attempt to connect with the teenage demographic, which is perhaps why we saw the Street Profits on this week’s Raw.
It is thought that the Ricochet push is in part due to his relative youth and athletic ability, something Paul Heyman and other WWE officials believe will help draw in younger viewers.
