Monday brought us arguably the most shocking and devastating revelation of the year in WWE. Roman Reigns vacated the Universal Championship due to his Leukaemia returning.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose were completely in the dark when it came to Roman Reigns’ Leukemia diagnosis and promo. Meltzer wrote:
“About an hour before the show, a few people, including both Rollins and Ambrose, were told that Reigns would be opening up the show and giving up the title, but were also given the same word we were, basically that it would all be explained when he did his promo.“Reigns had told Ambrose and Rollins before the show to be ready to come out and meet him when his promo was done, but neither were told what it was about.“Michael Cole also knew that the show would open with Reigns relinquishing the title, but it is believed he also didn’t know why. Whether he told Corey Graves and Renee Young beforehand that much is unclear.”
Reigns told the two before the show to be ready to meet him on stage after his promo, which as we saw, they did exactly, and their emotions on-stage were very raw and very real.
Michael Cole was also aware of Reigns’ promo, but like Rollins and Ambrose, he was also unaware of the meaning behind him giving the title up. It is unknown how aware/unaware Corey Graves or Renee Young were of the situation.
Reigns left the arena shortly after his promo, but not before receiving copious amounts of love and support from his coworkers and fellow wrestlers.
