The news that WWE has recently filed a trademark for the name ‘Worlds Collide’ might not seem particularly newsworthy on the surface, but peel away the layers and there may be the makings of a fascinating story underneath.
Back in mid-2018, there was very brief report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter stating that WWE had designs on running an “independent wrestling showcase” in 2019. The show would be akin to the Mae Young Classic and Cruiserweight Classic in that it featured several unsigned talents competing.
It was rumoured that WWE would utilise talent from PROGRESS, ICW, EVOLVE, NOAH and other groups to create this Network special, and the term Worlds Collide certainly seems to indicated a move in this direction.
With the wrestling world changing apace due to the various moves of ROH, AEW and New Japan, plus WWE’s own forays into international markets, putting together a show that gives the illusion of unity could be a very positive PR move for the promotion.
Alternatively, Worlds Collide could be the name of WWE’s return to PPV in Saudi Arabia in May or the name of a new special supercard in which wrestlers from the main roster collide with NXT superstars.
Which of these options do you think is most likely the reason behind the Worlds Collide trademark? Let us know in the poll below:
