Despite a rather busy schedule of stealing the show alongside Andrade on SmackDown this past week, as well as competing in the Royal Rumble match this Sunday, Rey Mysterio also managed to find time to pop by NXT yesterday.
The yellow brand put on a live event last night in San Diego, which just so happens to be Mysterio’s hometown. This isn’t the first time a main roster star has appeared on NXT, with some appearances even dating back to 2014 with Cesaro challenging Sami Zayn.
More recently however, Tyler Breeze and Harper have challenged Ricochet for his NXT North American Championship, so what did big man Rey have in store? A confrontation with Tommaso Ciampa perhaps? A dream combination of Mysterio and Ricochet for an action-packed thriller?

Well…not exactly. Kona Reeves had come out to the ring to trash the city of San Diego, because of course he did. After some “boo this man, he said bad things about my city” heat, Rey Mysterio made his grand entrance to a huge ovation.
After a brief back and forth on the microphone, Reeves attacked Mysterio from behind, but the former WWE Champion managed to come back and hit a 619 to send Reeves flopping out of the ring.
While it is slightly disappointing to not see Mysterio wrestle on the yellow brand, especially with some of the possible combinations of dream matchups, it’s always nice to see a hometown hero get the welcome they deserve.
